External Committees

In addition to the positions and departments within the Fachschafts' council, representatives of the Fachschafts' council sit on various committees of the respective department and faculty.
In the following, we will introduce you to the most important committees on which we have representatives and thus represent the students.

Examination Board Ba Physics & Ma Physics/Astronomy

The Examination Board resolves all disputes relating to examinations.

Department Meeting

The department meeting is the highest body of the Physics/Astronomy department. All status groups are represented on it, i.e. professors, academic staff, technical and administrative staff and, in particular, students. The members are elected by the Faculty Council and the number of students is determined by the number of professors. We currently have 10 representative positions and 10 deputy positions.
Commission meetings are closed meetings and are only open to members and invited guests.

AGFS

The working group for the further development of the degree program (AGFS) was set up to revise the module handbook and examination regulations. In the course of the corona pandemic, however, it has developed into a working group in which all topics affecting the teaching of the entire department are discussed. The original goal is to be pursued again in the summer semester of 2022.

QV Commission

The QV Commission is responsible for distributing the quality improvement funds available for teaching in physics. These may only be used to improve teaching and so the student members have a majority here.
The QV funds are also used to finance various offers from the Fachschafts' council, such as the revision courses and the C-course.

Evaluation project group

The evaluation project group organizes the regular implementation of procedures in the degree programmes in line with requirements. Based on the results of student surveys (evaluation) and the analysis of study progress data, they discuss and recommend measures for the further development of their curricula.

In physics, their role is quite subordinate.

Faculty Council of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Sean Bonkowski

deputy representative

The Faculty Council is the central decision-making body of the faculty and is made up of elected members from the status groups (professors, academic staff, technical and administrative staff and students). The term of office is 12 months and runs from the beginning of the summer semester to the end of the winter semester. It decides on faculty matters for which the responsibility is not otherwise specified (e.g. responsibilities of the deans).

In particular, it is responsible for all matters relating to research and teaching and for passing resolutions on the faculty statutes and other faculty regulations. The Faculty Council also has various commissions for special tasks.

Academic Advisory Board (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences)

The Academic Advisory Board advises the Faculty Council and the Dean's Office on all matters relating to teaching, studies and examinations for which they are responsible. It comments on drafts of study and examination regulations, makes suggestions for their improvement and can submit proposals.

Finance Commission (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences)

Matthias Engels

The Finance Commission discusses the faculty budget and its allocation to the institutes. There is a student representative here.

Academic Advisory Board (ULB)

Carla Vermöhlen

The ULB has created this committee to coordinate the ULB's services with the interests of the student body. This is where opinions and suggestions are brought to the ULB.

TRA 2 Building blocks of matter and fundamental interactions

Henry Schumacher

The transdisciplinary research area - Building Blocks of Matter and Fundamental Interactions (TRA 2 Matter) - offers an explorative network at the University of Bonn for scientists from different disciplines (e.g. chemistry, physics & astronomy, molecular biomedicine, geodesy, pharmacy, etc.) to support transdisciplinary exchange and collaboration.

The steering committee acts as the board of TRA Matter. It also includes a student member.

Building Commission

The Building Commission represents the interests of the Physics/Astronomy department in the area of building development. To this end, it determines requirements and communicates these to the university and the BLB.

Appointment committees

An appointment committee deals with the appointment of new professors at the University of Bonn in the field of physics/astronomy. The committee, which always includes two student representatives and two deputies, reviews application documents, obtains expert opinions and, at the end, passes on a list of candidates to be appointed.

Current appointment committees:

  • W2 Hadron at ELSA (Student representatives: Henry Schumacher, Lidia Bazenova, Cedric Breuning, Nienke Balz)
  • W3 exp. solid-state physics (Student representatives: Lidia Bazenova, Paul Ludwig, Carla Vermöhlen, Henry Schumacher)
